CVS Pharmacy has been carrying a line of Disney Halloween figures for the past few years.  This year, they have a ”swell” grouping of Disney fan favorites.  Among this year’s line-up are FrankenGoof (or Goofenstein!) and Donald “Devil” Duck, both pictured below.  They are also carrying a Pumpkin King Mickey, Pumpkin Queen Minnie and a Pirate Pluto.  What other cool Disney Halloween merchandise have you spotted this year?

This glittery owl figure was picked up at Michael’s.

In recent years, you may have noticed a significant increase in the amount of our feathered friends on store shelves.  Places like JoAnn Fabrics and Michael’s Arts and Crafts are continuing the trend this year, with a specific emphasis on the most inquisitive bird of all — owls.

Yes, a visit to almost any retailer this Halloween season will surely bring with it some owl sightings.  They come in all shapes and sizes and in a variety of different formats.  From beautiful to spooky, these night fliers are big!

Now you may be wondering why owls have long been associated with Halloween.  Owls have a long-running history with the sinister side of nature, especially in ancient folklore.  The Romans and the English both held beliefs that owls were in league with dark forces.  Owls were night hunters and that surely meant that they were creatures of the Underworld.  Their silent soaring, their loud screeching… all things to be feared in the cultures of old.  The associations have carried through to the modern day.  And while we now think of owls in more pleasant situations, they still maintain a strong association with night — and, as such, they are symbolic of Halloween.

So this year, you may want to pick up an owl to add a bit of wisdom to your Haunted Home.

The mistresses of mayhem are on the loose this Halloween.  After a long absence, Disney’s most villainous ladies have returned in rather spectacular form.  The Disney Store is offering a variety of merchandise featuring their likenesses.  Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Ursula and Cruella de Vil are among the featured creatures.  Currently, Disney Stores are offering stationary, cards, plush, ornaments and figures of these Villains, as well as others.  (Two of these figures are pictured below.)

In addition, a special Designer Collection of Disney Villains will debut in September.  The crown jewel of this release is a six doll set featuring completely updated looks for the ladies of villainy.  You can read more information on this exclusive doll collection at Disney’s retail blog.

Remember, our daily Halloween updates begin Monday September 3.  We can’t wait to see you then!  In the meantime, tell us who your favorite Disney Villain is…  Add a comment below!

Finding the Best Halloween Deals

One of our newest features is called “Swoop’s Scoop,” brought to you by our new friend, Swoop the Bat.  Swoop’s Scoop lets you in on upcoming merchandise of interest to fans of Horror and Halloween, and also gives you the scoop on some of the most affordable finds of the Halloween season.  Look forward to this feature throughout the coming weeks.  Our first installment is a basic overview of where you can track down some really awesome Halloween deals.

Many people believe that the only time you can get great offers on Halloween merchandise is on November 1.  That thinking is flawed.  While that may be the case most of the time at the big box retailers, there are great Halloween deals all season long at discounters.

Ross and Tuesday Morning both offer high quality items at 50-70% off their original retail prices.  You can expect to find everything from snowglobes to vintage reproduction pieces at these “boo-tiques.”  In addition, these types of stores have been known to get shipments from mainstream manufacturers like Department 56 and Annalee.

In addition, Big Lots has its own unique lineup of Halloween merchandise, offering markdowns on items that are similar to those you would find at major retailers and specialty stores.  Looking for skull lights or pumpkin path finders?  What about spooky signs and yard decorations?  They have all of these items and more!

Another place to get great deals on Halloween is one you probably wouldn’t expect – the Halloween specialty store.  In larger cities, there are entire facilities dedicated to discounted Halloween costumes and decorations.  But if your city doesn’t have one of these haunts, you may want to check with the mainstream Halloween stores.  Many places, like Spirit, offer select merchandise from previous years at discounted rates, so it’s definitely worth asking one of the sales associates if  a discount section exists.

Well that covers our overview.  Swoop will be back with posts about great finds all season long, so bookmark us or subscribe!
